How to Turn Your Internship into a Job

I have been asked many times how I turned my internship into a full-time job. I am sure that there were many factors, which contributed to this, but there also were things, which were in my control and made the main difference. Both as the former intern and the person who currently has interns, I can tell that there are many things you can do to create a positive impression, whether it is just being on time or bringing great ideas to the company.

Here are my tips that can help you turn your internship into a full-time job.

Meet New People

Whether you are an intern or a full-time employee, it is vital to get to know a lot of people in the company, the ones who are both in and out your department. Moreover, it is important to not only be receptive to meeting someone new, but be proactive about it. Among numerous ways to do this, the most effective one is taking assignments, which involve interacting with the employees in other positions or departments – this can include simple mail delivery or more significant tasks. The more immersed in the company you are, the better it is for you.

Take It Seriously

The phrase you should never say is, “That is not my job.” If you are not able to be flexible and go beyond your designated duties as an intern, the potential employer will hardly imagine you being hired. Keep in mind that the way you act as an intern demonstrates the way you are seen as a potential employee. If you have completed all your assignments for the day, ask your supervisor whether there is anything else you can do.

Contribute to the Company

If you have been an intern before, you know that there is always a moment when you think, “Why are they doing it this way – it is ineffective! This could go so much faster if we did so.” So, here is the thing: instead of just thinking, find a way to voice your ideas. The best way to make a strong impression is to contribute something to the organization. So, whether you have any ideas about the way to do something or to improve the current system, do not feel shy to speak up.

Know Your Place

This sounds a bit harsh, but being an office worker requires certain decorum, to which you are probably not used, because you have never been in that position before. While it is vital to contribute, meet new people and stand out as an intern, the way you are doing all that is just as crucial. When speaking to your superiors, you have to keep in mind that they are experts in their field and have more experience than you do.
